Conan O Brien December 13 2001 Transcribed by Katie for ElijahFan.com Conan O'Brien - Hey everybody, welcome back! My first guest can be seen in the epic film, everybody's talking about it, The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring, which opens December 19th. Please welcome... Elijah Wood! (crowd applauds, Elijah walks in, waves, shakes hands with Conan, and sits down) Elijah Wood - Good to see ya! Conan - Well, very sincerly, congradulations, I know you were here a few years ago, and uh.. Elijah - Back in the in the Faculty days... Conan - That's right, you were promoting another movie and this thing, people are talking about it like this is the second coming, this is huge this movie! Elijah - (laughs) It's scary, it's scary. Conan - Is it scary? Why? Elijah - It is a little bit, I've never been a part of anything so massive, so... you know I'm used to smaller pictures. They're talking like next Star Wars for this, so... Conan - Right! And also, they did something very unusual, they shot three of the pictures at the same time. Elijah - The same time. Sixteen months I was in New Zealand. Conan - You were shooting this sixteen months - and it sounds so... it's kind of risky to say 'this is going to be so good we're making three of them at once'. Elijah - I know. Right? Well it's all banking on the first one, so if the first one fails, then we're... screwed (makes funny face.) Conan - Right, well, it won't! (Elijah laughs) Just so you know, Polly Shore made three BioDomes.... (crowd laughs and Conan grins and says "No, I'm just kidding") Elijah - So they're all locked away in a vault? Come on I wanna see those! Conan - You believed me for a second. Yeah he was like 'Dude! This is going all the way!' Elijah - Duuude! BioDome! Conan - No, but this is a - you made this thing, it's huge, have you seen the movie? Elijah - I've seen the first one, three times now. Conan - You've seen it three times? Elijah - Yeah, I love it more and more. Conan - Do you jump up and point and say "That is me."? Elijah - (points and says in funny voice "That's Frodo!") Conan - I was looking at clips today, and it's obviously part of your character you, you have giant feet... like is it digitally? I mean, I dunno how they did this, did they digitally put giant feet on you because... Elijah - Nnnooo, actually every morning at five in the morning they put these prostetics on my feet that were a little larger than mine. I had to stand up at five in the morning while they glued it on, and so... Conan - (in awed tone) Really?? They glued fake feet to your real feet? Elijah - Yes, they did! (looks a bit embarassed and laughs) Conan - What a freak show. Elijah - I know, right? (crowd laughs) Elijah - And they put a little wig lace on top to make them hairy, cuz hobbits have hairy feet. Conan - It was wierd because it reminded me of when I first started to have my growth spurt... they... (Elijah and crowd laugh and Conan holds up his hands) I swear to God, like, I was like fifteen years old, my feet grew first... and I had like this little body and clown feet! (makes a funny walking movement) ... when I walked around. And people mocked me and played circus music wherever I went. Elijah - Oh! That's nice! (crowd laughs) Conan - So did you get to keep your feet, you gonna use 'em? Elijah - I didn't, they actually go bad if you let them have too much air after awhile they start smelling like urine. (makes a funny face) (Conan and crowd laugh) Elijah - (laughing) Which isn't good, right? Conan - I'm glad I followed this line of questions. (laughs) I could have let it go but I'm like tell us more of these magical feet! (crowd laughs again) COnan - Now, you shot this in New Zealand, is that right? Elijah - In New Zealand, yeah. Conan - In New Zealand, and you got really close to the other cast members, isn't that right? Elijah - I did! Yeah, I mean, we became a real fellowship. The fellowship is represented in the film, it's basically this group of people who follow Frodo on his journey. And I made some of the best friends of my life on this. We actually all got tatoos... to kind of mark the journey, so... Conan - That's also what Poly Shore did on BioDome. Elijah - Did he? (nods, and audience laughs) Conan - They put the BioDome tatoo (laughs) Elijah - Right. Conan - It's terrible taking it off... Elijah - (chuckles) Conan - So what would you guys do? I mean, what is there to do in, ah, you were probably in a little town alot of the time in New Zealand. What was there to do? Did you have any fun? Elijah - Well we went surfing quite alot actually, we all took up surfing, I got my own, you know, wetsuit, surf board, all that sort of thing, we did that quite alot. We went to the bars, you know. The hobbits basically spent most of the time together, we had the closest relationship. Conan - So really, all the actors who played hobbits, actually hung out together? You said 'it's us hobbits against the rest of the people in this movie'? Elijah - Yeah, and we referred to ourselves of hobbits as well. We were the closest. Conan - (awed tone) Really? You referred to yourselves, you're like 'hey hobbits! Let's go get some booze!'? Elijah - Yeah... we were like 'what did you do last night? Oh, us and the, you know, hobbits, we went out, yeah. That sort of thing. Conan - You spent too much time in New Zealand! (crowd laughs) Elijah - We spent too much time in Middle-Earth. I think it became too real for us. Conan - Well that's... scary. Uh... (crowd laughs) Elijah - It's like a big D&D [Dungeons & Dragons] game. You become too obsessed with the... Conan - Well probably, the people who play Dungeons & Dragons really get to that level... believing that they are the person. Elijah - Yeah, totally. Conan - Uh, no offence to them, because they're probably most of our viewers. (Elijah and crowd laugh) Conan - (puts on a high voice and shakes finger) What was he saying about us? I'll rob his magic gold. (Elijah and crowd laugh) Conan - Ah, now I heard that while you were there, shooting this film you and the other "hobbits" decided to go visit the... Elijah - The Star Wars set. Conan - The Star Wars set! Which was nearby! Is that true? Elijah - That's right, yeah, we went to Sydney on a vacation, cuz the hobbits went on vacation together, as you do... (crowd laughs) Elijah - And we... Conan - (laughing) I just wanna see you guys piling onto an airplane! Elijah - But we actually took an Elf along with us, Orlando who plays Legolas, with us, so we were the hobbits and an Elf. Conan - Right. Elijah - We went to the Star Wars set, and we hung out with the cast, which was great! ... but they... Conan - What's it like on the Star Wars set? Elijah - Completely different! Our world in New Zealand was rugged and kind of dirty and messy, and you know, it was this passionate kind of experience. Star Wars was like sterile and clean and they were shooting digitally and they had like editing stuff on set... it was very strange. But we ended up hanging with the cast, and they just thought we were this rogue group of people. Conan - They thought you were strange? Elijah - Yeah they did, cuz we referred to ourselves as hobbits, again and uh... (everyone laughs) Elijah - And they're like, 'look, you know what? I'm not the Princess of whatever world, I'm, you know, Natalie Portman.' And I'm like, well, I'm Elijah, but I'm Frodo as well, so... Conan - Right. (patronizing tone) You're really a hobbit! (Elijah and crowd laugh) Conan - Do you think that if there had to be a fight, and I just love this kind of question, but let's say there was a fight between the Hobbits and the Star Wars cast, what would happen? Elijah - Um, you know what? I think that the Hobbits would win. The Star Wars cast, they've got the lightsabers, slight advantage. We've got the Ring of power. (makes a face that says 'and that's the end of that!') Conan - Lightsaber! Nothing beats a Lightsaber! Elijah - Yeah but we've got the - Conan - 'I've got this magical Ring!' (crowd laughs) Elijah - It's the magical Ring of power. Conan - They'll slice your head off! Elijah - We've got a bit more heart as well. Conan - We have a clip here from Lord of the Rings. Elijah - Oh cool! Conan - What do we need to know to understand and appreciate? Elijah - I believe this is actually the first time that Frodo sees the Elvish of the Ring, it's the first time that we actually find out it's the Ring of Power. Conan - (to audience) take a look at this clip. (clip plays.) (Elijah does a wierd shivering thing as clip ends. Crowd applauds for long time.) Conan - That's amazing. We were chatting during ... (waits for applause to stop) While we were showing the clip, we were chatting, and I was just saying to you what an amazing experience you're very young and you're working with Ian McKellen, one of the greatest actors of all time. Elijah - Absolutely incredible, yeah. And to be able to call him a friend is even more incredible. Lovely guy. Conan - I've heard that already, you're starting to have celebrities give you their phone numbers and stuff, cuz you got all this heat on you right now and... Elijah - Oh, right... Conan - Is that true? Elijah - Uh, well, I've got a few, yeah! You know, Salma Heyek I've worked with and Brooke Shields I've worked with, I have their phone numbers. Conan - Yeah it's just so wierd cuz they've been on my show many times... Elijah - Oh they're great! Beautiful... Conan - And yet never a phone number! (crowd chortles) Elijah - They're lovely, and you're going to hate me even more because I don't call them! So I have them but... Conan - (laughs) If I asked one of them they'd be like 'yeah, it's 555-1234' (crowd laughs) Elijah - (waving) Tell Brooke and Salma I said hello. It's been too long. Conan - And before we go I hear you're really excited about your action figure (reaches behind desk and pulls out Frodo figure) Elijah - (fists clenched above head in giddiness) Oh the toy!! (crowd laughs) Elijah - This is the coolest thing in the world! (crowd laughs more) Elijah - Hey, I'm a Star Wars geek from way back! Conan - Yeah look at this, you got an action figure! That's when you know you've... look at this little guy! Elijah - (laughter in voice) I've arrived. (laughs) Conan - I knew I had arrived when I got my action figure (pulls out a doll that looks like him), I just knew... (crowd laughing and clapping) Elijah - Could I have that?! Cuz that's the coolest thing in the world! Conan - (laughing) You can't have this it's the only one! Elijah - Aw! (makes a "oh darn" motion) Conan - (holding up doll) Think anybody would make these??? Elijah - Weeelll... Conan - (laughs) That'll be a big seller! Elijah - Put it on eBay, you'll get thousands for it, I promise. Conan - Yeah, I promise, uh, fantasy eBay in my mind! (Elijah and crowd laugh) Conan - The Lord of the Rings: THe Fellowship of the Ring, it's, uh, never heard people talk about a film this way, it's, it's gonna be great, opens next Wednesday, thanks so much for coming back (shakes Elijah's hand) Elijah - Aw, thanks. Conan - Really, good work! (crowd applaudes, and Elijah waves) Conan - Elijah Wood, everybody! (Conan's drum/jazz music comes on and Elijah pretends to be drumming. Camera zooms out)
