INTERVIEW ELIJAH WOOD - JO WHILEY RADIO ONE - 7 OF MAY 2004

JW: I’m really thrilled to have the company here of Elijah Wood. Thank you for coming in, doing this.
EW : * stupid giggles * Thank you ! It’s an absolute honour to be here
JW: Yeh you’re quite a big fan of radio one, you’re quite aware of radio one which is quite unusual
EW: I am. Maybe it is, as an American. I'm just a huge music fan and I think if at all you're a fan of music, you hear about it - certainly with John Peel, Peel Sessions, things like that...
JW: yeah.... ok, I was gonna give you this at the end of the interview but I’ll give it now just to start things off we tried to find Peel so he can come and say hello but he’s not here but I’ve got a signed picture...
EW: NO?!?
JW: ...which blahblah something about peel not liking this picture and blahblah boring

EW: It’s one of those wonderful things where bands revealed themselves to be what it really is, you know what I mean. They’re so ??? and often they end up doing covers and things, it’s just brilliant
JW: that’s what we’re trying to do on this show. We’ve had... I don’t know if you’ve heard of Elbow. D’you know Elbow?
EW: Yeh! Love Elbow
JW: they came in here and they did ‘destiny’s child - independent woman’
EW: No!!!
JW: yeh! I must find it then cos it’s absolutely hilarious!
EW: oh yeh!

JW: so which British bands u like then?
EW * weirdest sound ever * (hesitating)
JW: at the moment
EW: at the moment? Oh still far too many things, I’m quite into Franz Ferdinand who are quite big here aren’t they?
JW yeh it’s been taking off since the past year
EW: yeh they’re just now kinda getting into the united states
JW: are they?
EW: but uh I quite like them, the new Squarepusher’s really good.
JW yeh i heard you like ‘em
EW: Detroit cobras. D’you like the Detroit cobras ?
JW: yeh I do
EW: I think they’re wonderful

JW: so tell us about this film you’re filming
EW: hum it’s basically about a guy who is this American that gets kick out of college in the united states and ends up coming to England to visit his sister. He ends up falling into a gang of hooligans essentially. And they become his sort of family and his friends and he himself ends up falling into the world of hooliganism. Which is quite interesting and very different from anything I’ve ever done before. And [it was] fascinating, it wasn’t something that I was familiar with, being from the states

JW: did you witness some things? Cos you’ve done a lot of undercover, well, you’ve been to loads of football match didn’t you?
EW: yeh I’ve been to like three or four west ham games
JW: right, so what kind of things did u witness?
EW: hum, a copious amount of alcohol
JW: would you join them with?
EW: Sure yeh. It’s amazing, you know football is an incredible kind of institution here that obviously you know sports is a big thing in the united states but I’ve never been to a match with that kind of energy before
JW: incredible passion running through it
EW: amazing! I mean, there’s this sort of ??? energy in the crowd at a football match and it’s been amazing to experience that and also the hooligans side and to get a sense of what that is
JW: so did you research that? Did you witness anything?
EW: I didn’t really see any actual outlet of violence. A lot of slagging each other off from afar. I think there’s too many policemen to really kick off but it was definitely in the air, you could feel it

Play: Outkast - Hey ya

PART TWO

JW: you were dj-ing werent you last nite?
EW: I did! * laughs * I dj-ed for like 4 hours
JW: Four hours!
EW: yeh I was meant to dj for three and this dj came up to me, she was also there last nite, and said “well they asked if I could come on at the end, d’you mind just doing two hours?” and I said “yeh that’s fine” and so I was sort of going and going and then when she came up she was like “are you happy to keep going” so I said “yeh sure”
JW: hang on, where did you get all your records from?
EW: you know what I did? I dj-ed with iPods
JW: really?
EW: * sounds proud of himself* hum yeh I had two linked up and just played the songs off them.
JW: that’s quite impressive
EW: * very proud* yeh!
JW: so you had your personal collection on your iPods?
EW: with my own personal collection
JW: ok so what’s the first record that you played?
EW: I started out with that main song from kill bill volume one
JW: ok. And your last song?
EW: uuuh
JW: d’you remember that? Cos that was like 6 in the morning
EW: oh my god, the last song, I can’t remember but at one point I did play “I’m forever blowing bubbles” * laughing*
JW: * laughing *
EW: and there was a few West Ham lads in the party last nite so they were quite happy

JW: so I went to see uh ‘eternal uhh aah
EW: the eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
JW: thank you for helping me with that. For people who haven’t seen the film, can you explain what goes on in the film?
EW: hum it’s really a headtrip. The basic story is Kate Winslet had him [ndrl: Jim Carrey] erased from her memory and he finds this out, he’s heart-broken and decides to do the same. Midway through the procedure, he realises in his head that he wants to stop, he doesn’t want to lose his memories even though they are bad memories, that they’ve had bad experiences. Ultimately, what’s really wonderful about her, he doesn’t want to lose. I play a character who works for the company, Lacuna Inc, that erases people’s memories. I end up falling in love with Kate while we’re working on her and I use essentially Jim Carrey’s character [traits] to sort of manipulate her to fall in love with me. And no acting required, I completely fell in love with Kate making that film.
JW: She’s absolutely gorgeous in the movie
EW oh yeh, and such a wonderful human being as well. That was wonderful to work with her
JW: Jim Carrey’s quite a phenomenon, what was it like to work with him?
EW: He's fascinating - I could talk about Jim for hours. There's something in this character in this film that in some ways is actually close to who he is. He's incredibly extroverted. But I think, that sort of extroverted behaviour comes out of a real extroverted sense of himself.
JW: so was it like that when you weren’t filming as well or did he then revert to do a few comic faces?
EW: oh he would definitely do that. I think in some ways, doing a character like this was kind of painful for him because he couldn’t break out of it, he had to be this sort of subdued character all the time. So often, out of nowhere he kind of bust into some kind of comic routine and just kind of let go. But he was brilliant, fascinating to listen to and talk to.

JW: ok we’ll play the Darkness and we’ll talk more after this
EW: oah the Darkness!

PART THREE

JW: that was the Darkness on radio one. You were kind of ??? are you a fan of the Darkness?
EW: I’m a fan of the novelty of the Darkness because I mean the Darkness are fun but for me there’s nothing more than novelty in that
JW: and they take the music very seriously
EW: which I guess is better if they do
JW: are they any Darkness tracks on your iPods?
EW: yeh the main single “I believe in a thing called love” which is a great song. I mean, you know, I can’t slag the band
JW: ok, maybe second album then?
EW: * not much convinced * Maybe.

JW: have you ever been in hospital?
EW * Elijah’s own little hysterical laugh * funny you should mention that. I was just telling someone about my hospital experience. I had my appendix burst last August
JW: oh no!
EW: I was in the hospital for a week and they had to operate and take it out.
JW: What’s the ringtone on your mobile?
EW: At the moment... hmm what is it? I think it may just be ‘just can’t get enough’ by Depeche Mode
JW: oh really?
EW: hum yeh. It’s either that or the Super Mario Bros theme song
JW: * laughs * ok
EW: hmmm....
JW: what’s the last truly good film that you saw?
EW: Well, I did quite like Kill Bill 2 but I didn’t like it as much as the first one.
JW: Lost in translation?
EW: Loved it!! Absolutely loved it! Hum, City of Gods is one of the greatest movie I’ve seen in ages so I’d probably have to go with City of God.
JW: If you wake up feeling hungover, what’s your best way to recover?
EW: Coffee and cigarettes. Which is probably the worst thing you can do for a hangover. So that wouldn’t necessarily be advised.
JW: what’s the last thing you mom said to you before you leave the house?
EW: I love you, see you later
JW: Awww... good relationship with your mom?
EW: yeh great. I wouldn’t be who I am and where I am without my mom, she’s amazing.
JW: what’s the moment that changed your life?
EW: I got a phone call from Peter Jackson asking me if I wanted to be Frodo in Lord of The Rings. That was certainly a life-changing experience
JW: is it relief that it finally all over or it’s the worst anti-climax ever?
EW: it’s a mix I think. It was the greatest experience in my life and I made some of the best friends of my life as a result. But at the same time, I think it’s nice to be able to move on and have a sense of completion.
JW: when was the last time you were in a fight?
EW: I’ve never been in a fight.
JW: No? You walk away?
EW: Yeh
JW: don’t have the temper?
EW: nah, not really
JW: which bands logos did you scribble on your textbooks? You know, at school
EW: oh, that’s easy, Smashing Pumpkins
JW: Really?
EW: Yeh. D’you know the heart with the SP in the centre? That was kinda their symbol for a while
JW: And the management of Radio One wants to know, when John Peel next goes on holidays, if you could come in, you could do his shows
EW: You’re kidding?!?
JW: no no I’m not kidding at all
EW: I would absolutely love to do that
JW: yeh?
EW: oh my god yeah!!!
JW: excellent, watch this space! Thanks very much indeed, we’re now gonna play a track that’s featured in the film ‘the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”
EW: Oh wicked!
JW: Elijah, thanks very much to you! And this is Beck
EW: Same.

Nb: for those of you wondering, the song “I’m forever blowing bubbles” is West Ham anthem.
