Ashley's review of Ash Wednesday
Rating: ****
xkes place in the early 80s in a rough Irish Catholic neighborhood in New York City. One night while working in the bar, 18 year old Sean Sullivan (Elijah Wood) overhears 3 men planning to kill his older brother (Frances Sullivan). While the three men leave the bar to go to the bathroom, Sean follows them in and kills them. A little while later, an arm with Sean's watch and ring was found in the river, which convinced the neighborhood and the men who wanted revenge that he was dead. However, three years later to the day, a rumor spreads around the neighborhood that Sean has been seen walking the streets at night. Sean's wife and friends don't want to belive it, and the men who wanted revenged want the truth. It is eventually discovered that Sean is still alive, and now his and Frances' lives are in danger. Frances, with the help Father Mahoney now need to find a way to get Sean out of the city before it's too late.
The movie is very confusing, but overall it's pretty good. It's different. I would give it 4 stars. There are some plot holes, and the ending could have been better. I recommend it to all Elijah fans who don't mind blood and lots of cursing. The plot line and characters are hard to follow so it's a movie that requires lots of attention if you want to understand what's going on. And also, an excellant performance by Elijah as usual.
