The Faculty

The Faculty is directed by Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn), and is definitely an enjoyable sci-fi- horror movie. The film hosts a great teen cast including the extremely talented and gorgeous Elijah Wood. Elijah Wood plays Casey, the school nerd type character that gets bullied daily. But Casey grabs the audiences affections at the very beginning with an upsetting scene of him wiping a bleeding nose in the toilets! *sobs!. Josh Hartnett (Halloween: H20) plays Zeke, a brainy, drug-dealing rebel. Also starring, Clea DuVall who plays Stokley, an unpopular high-school "outsider", Shawn Hatosy plays Stan the jock, Jordana Brewster as the head cheerleader, Delilah, Laura Harris as the sweet Mary Beth from Louisiana and is the “new girl” to Harrington High, including singer/actor Usher Raymond in a small role. Then there are the teachers. Bebe Neuwirth is Miss Drake the principal, Jon Stewart as Mr. Furlong, the science teacher, Famke Janssen plays Miss Burke, the English teacher, Salma Hayek as the school Nurse and Robert Patrick (Terminator 2, X-Files) as the football coach/gym teacher.

In this teen movie strange things start happening at Harrington High in Ohio. The story confirms suspicions that teachers really are from another planet! However, it is actually an alien parasite that starts possessing the teachers and gradually takes over the entire school. The people possessed by the aliens have their inhibitions removed, and this makes their behaviour erratic and bizarre. They must drink lots of water, because the aquatic aliens are sucking up all the water from inside them!! It is left to six very different teenagers to prevent the aliens from taking over. As strange situations start to happen, such as teachers showing up in the boy’s showers, they decide to forget their differences and work together to stop the aliens.

The Faculty is not just a horror movie as it makes some interesting points about high school life and our desire to fit in, as well as hosting some great lines, "I’m the head cheerleader and that means I’m supposed to date the star quarterback". It also includes real life topics such as drugs and violence that adds to the quality of the movie. As this movie is an alien movie, this usually means ‘effects’. The effects are not fantastic quality, but they get the job done, and provide some chilling and gruesome moments. The Faculty has been criticised for using parts of other stories (‘Invasion Of The Body Snatchers’) and mixing them all up together. However, does it really matter that this is not the most original film in the world? No! The Faculty blends ideas from different movies and comes up with a new and exciting one that’s worth seeing.
